YOUR WEB GUIDE
By Jim Moore, Phoenix Technologies

If you're planning on designing your own web site, you first need to understand a few things about the Internet - the medium in which your site resides.

Just as it takes more than being a couch potato to be a television producer, it also takes more than being a Net surfer to design a web page.

If you know nothing about the Internet, you need to start somewhere else, such as "A Dummies Guide to the Internet" or any of a thousand good (and some not so good) books, as well as countless web sites aimed at beginning Web users.

This guide to the Internet focuses on some basic things you need to know about the Internet as it relates to web design. After some delay due to family illness, it is now finished (Aug. 19, 2007). This guide will deal with such things as: absence

  • Dialup, DSL and Cable Connections

  • Modem Speed vs. Download Speed

  • Browsers

  • Media Players

  • Type Fonts

  • Spyware, Malware, Adware & Scumware

  • Screen Resolution & Colors

  • Website Domain Names

  • Website Hosts

  • Web Design Software

  • Frames vs. No Frames

  • Page Loading Time

  • Uploading Your Site

  • Navigation

  • User-Friendliness

These chapters will be fairly brief, but - for WebShop customers - will be augmented by more detailed examples and actual tools you can use to actually build and refine your site.

These tools, found in our Toolbox for Web Designers, supplement programs such as MS Front Page, Adobe Pagemill, Dreamweaver and all the other web design programs.
